ESA or service animal?

They are not interchangeable. Understanding the difference protects your rights, your animal, and the people around you.

Emotional Support Animal

Support through presence

  • May provide emotional support that helps with symptoms of a mental health disability.
  • Housing accommodation questions may involve the Fair Housing Act and the housing provider’s process.
  • Does not have automatic public-access rights in stores, restaurants, or other pet-restricted spaces.

Service animal

Trained for a task

  • Generally trained to perform specific tasks directly related to a person’s disability.
  • Public access rules can differ from housing accommodation rules.
  • An ESA evaluation or letter does not turn an animal into a service animal.

The important boundary

Serendipia Therapy can evaluate whether an ESA may be clinically appropriate for a Florida client. We cannot determine your animal’s training, guarantee a housing provider’s decision, or provide service-animal certification.
